QUESTIONS ON THE WAY AT FOUNTAIN VALLEY – Volume 2
The Venerable Master: Ah, back then there was a lot of opposition. Ah, someone walked past and stuck a chicken-feather broom up my nose, saying, ‘What sort of Buddha doesn’t go up the mountain to practise? What is a Buddha practising at home for?’ Ah. But I was sitting there, and some people said I looked just like the Buddha; see? Sticking this broom up my nose; what a nuisance!
As for this, you haven’t been teased! Do you see? You only have courage, because you know that your ultimate path is simply to return to yourself; no one else will help you. Whatever you want—whether it’s to destroy the Communists or to do something else—you must have wisdom; we must be better than them! The Communists—where do they come from? They emerged from within the Nationalist government to become Communists. Now, why don’t we infiltrate the Communist camp and transform it into a Nationalist one? We must be purer; we must not be afraid; we must advance courageously, and we must be wiser than them if we are to defeat them! Do you see? The Communists aren’t just some random people; they’re the sons of Mr Hộ and the like—they’re the ones raising Mr Hộ’s sons, not some entirely different sort of Communist! They’ve even studied in the West, haven’t they! From within the house itself!
Now we must practise love and morality to instil them within their hearts; only then can we take over their stronghold (unclear – 1:12). Take up this weapon; if you wish to fight, you must use the weapon of love and morality to achieve a complete victory, rather than winning for a moment only for them to take it back. Do you see? Because we practise love and morality, we speak a single phrase that easily unites us: ‘I do not covet what is yours; you do not covet what is mine; know that I am not covetous by nature. I act for the sake of God: merely to atone for my sins; merely to see my own enlightenment; merely to cultivate my own enlightenment.’ Only then can everyone move towards success with ease. But if we keep arguing endlessly, causing disputes, hiding behind our temperaments, and harbouring anger towards one another—how can anything be achieved? Even small-scale trade would fail; let alone talking about great undertakings! Do you see?
Therefore, the very foundation of our existence is stagnating; your spirit is stagnating. I used to be just like you; but now I see my spirit clearly; and I see clearly that everyone’s spirit is managing their own ‘Microcosm’, not someone else. Therefore, we must take control of the situation. Now that you’ve awakened, return to yourself and put it into practice; now practise your internal cultivation first, to strengthen your internal organs, so that your contemplation grows ever deeper and more lucid; contemplate those matters, but you must broaden your perspective even further, and then you’ll see that the world has no Communism! There is no Communism! There is ‘Re-property’: simply taking others’ possessions and putting them in one’s own pocket; that is not Communism. ‘Communism’ is not like that! The world—the whole world, including the Soviet Union—I see that there is still no Communism! They do not know how to do it! They have not yet realised love and morality! People are afraid; they are fleeing—that is not Communism!
Only Heaven and the Buddha can do that. Do you see? Only the love of God can do it: bestowing it boundlessly upon us so that at any moment we are entitled to enjoy it, in nobility; and our state of mind—that is, acting ‘to give to everyone’—if everyone were to act in this way, only then would our country be healthy. Take love as our eternal, indestructible barrier, and then ‘Without fighting, victory comes naturally.’ We do not fight with guns, but with the Dharma, with the heart, with supreme wisdom. We must be wiser than them to defeat them! If we are more foolish than them, how can we possibly defeat them? If we remain constantly resentful and quarrel amongst ourselves; if our actions lack any coherence whatsoever, how can we possibly call for an attack on others? We must practise love and morality; then our techniques will be more advanced, our wisdom greater, and our nation more prosperous. Do you see? We’ll be more open-minded. Even a wise president, if the people aren’t wise, will still be overthrown! When the whole nation is orderly, that country is incredibly stable. Do you see?
Now we have the chance to restore order whilst we have a free hand: back in Vietnam, the military used to make us get out of our cars and run all the time; that’s all over now! (laughs) But restoring order is simply about returning to Britain to fulfil your own will; and within that will lies true love and morality; now you miss your homeland more than ever, and you cherish those who remain. Do you see? The opportunity for you to put love and morality into practice is ‘Restoring the Kingdom’. If the king does not know how to love his people, and the people do not know how to love their king, then it is bound to collapse— , isn’t it? Well, that very situation is currently unfolding in Vietnam: ‘The king does not know how to love his people; and the people do not know how to love their king.’ In the past, whenever anyone spoke of Uncle Ho, they looked to him; now, they’ve turned their backs on him! Never mind that; that issue, that problem, is simple enough—no need to calculate it; even a child could work it out! Do you see? “Why did that official leave his country? And I, not being a Communist, left—that’s right; but why did he leave? What’s going on here?” We see it clearly now. So, after two or three rounds like that, sifting through it again and again, only then will they unite; only then will it be good: an opportunity for the Vietnamese people to awaken and reunite in greater glory.
Now we’re restoring order; there’s nothing else to it; just focusing on restoring order is enough. God hasn’t abandoned us: if He brought us here, He’ll bring us back, if we know Him; do you see? Besides, here, I mean, God has also come here; and have you seen anyone taking advantage of us? Have you? Then we too will be free to discuss, free to meet, free to see friends—all to restore life, to find life within our own lives.
Fellow believer: Yes, with your permission, Master. This is the first time I’ve come to see you here.
The Master: Yes.
Disciple: But I actually learnt of you a few months ago, thanks to a friend of mine, Mr Tiền. I’m sure you’re aware that Mr Tiền has been practising with you for quite some time now. Ah, my family follow Buddhism; so I’d like to ask you, Master, regarding the practice you teach—in relation to Buddhism, is there anything that is criticised, or are there differences, and could there be any harm in it?
The Venerable Master: You see, in Buddhism there are many sutras and many images of the Buddha; but when people recite the sutras, they do not understand the underlying principles. Why? Because there is a lack of order! Now, this Dharma restores that order; only then do we realise how precious the Buddha’s words are. At that point, one truly reveres the Buddhas and the Immortals, and one must return to one’s Buddha-nature. Therefore, the Buddha left behind the teaching: ‘The Buddha is the mind; you are the Buddha; if you wish to go, you will become a Buddha; but if you do not go, you will become demons.’ The Buddha spoke clearly. Do you see? Therefore, one should not rely on theory alone and forget to practise.
As for this Dharma, it is about restoring order to understand the things we have revered from time immemorial; that is its essence; that is all. Therefore, this Dharma is not something that only Buddhists can practise, whilst Christians cannot. Anyone can practise it: even a merchant can become a Buddha if he knows how to restore order; then he will see the ‘Scripture Without Words’ before his very eyes, and the law of cause and effect before his very eyes. Even a merchant can practise: an entire temple of the Dharma right within his shop. Do you see? Amidst all the gathering, hoarding, movement, chaos, counter-forces and everything else in there; his education must lead him to abandon greed and to practise compassion and morality. There you have it. Thus, politics and the military all have the potential to aspire upwards towards the Buddha.
Therefore, whilst everyone believes in the Buddha, they have not yet re-established order within themselves to receive what the Buddha teaches. It is like a philosophy lecturer in a university who lectures on philosophy, yet many students, upon hearing philosophy, fall asleep! Because there is no order. And philosophy is not easy to explain, is it? It is not easy to speak in a way that moves people’s hearts! But without order, they listen and say, ‘It’s too tiring; it’s better to go out and have a beer! Listening to this man talk about morality all the time is exhausting!’ Isn’t that right? There are such people because their level of understanding has not yet reached that point.
As for us, practising this Dharma is about purification—‘removing the impure, retaining the pure’—and returning to the inherent level of our spiritual nature; only then will you be able to receive it, and only then will you dare to say what Buddhism is. But right now, if you say ‘Buddhism’, even the Buddha Himself wouldn’t recognise it; I’m telling you the truth. What does Buddhism teach us? We aren’t practising it correctly. You must admit that you aren’t practising it correctly. You see it when you go to the temple, but when you return home, you’re still full of anger. How can you practise correctly if you’re still full of anger! This Dharma, however, will eradicate and dispel that anger and delusion; it will open the heart to compassion, allowing you to see that everyone is you; it is a source of immense joy!
Only then do we realise that the Amitabha Sutra is a treasure of this world, yet no one knows it. Any sutra—the Lankavatara Sutra, or any other—is a treasure, serving to remind us of the actions of those who have succeeded. But if we do not act, how can we achieve success? If we merely cultivate empty theory, we only create turmoil within ourselves, and end up beating our own heads against a brick wall—what good does that do? Is that not so?
Fellow practitioners: If anyone has any questions, please use the microphone to facilitate the recording.
The Master: Those who have not yet begun their spiritual practice, or who have just started, are all currently grappling with the distinction between the Soul and the Spirit. Consequently, this is a process that requires us to go through many stages, because as individuals who accept and develop the ‘Minor Cosmos’ already bestowed upon us by the Higher Power—which possesses an innate, enlightened and open structure—we must understand and exercise self-control over the movements within our own bodies. Therefore, you see, within this ‘Minor Heaven and Earth’, the ‘Vía’ must shift. And why must it shift? So that the ‘Thần Hồn’ may perceive the precise reports—Upper, Middle and Lower—within each person’s body, in order to understand. From there, we become enlightened; this is called ‘courage in enlightenment’, not the courage found in darkness: courage in darkness is the courage to strike; whereas courage in enlightenment is the courage to evolve endlessly.
Therefore, one must realise these states. When you practise Zen, you lie down, and the energy becomes distorted, circulating within that essence, and it only resonates with worldly matters and lower frequencies. Therefore, we must learn; and this is an opportunity to resolve our doubts.
Then, once you have advanced to higher levels, such scenes hold no significance for us at all. At first, they are intriguing; it is through them that we make progress and cultivate inner awareness of the mind and the inner self. After some time, you will reach the enlightened state of ‘Great Emptiness Samadhi’, where one perceives only the aura and develops boundlessly. At that point, ‘The scene is me, I am the scene’—this is when one takes on the mission to ‘Transmit the Dharma’, meaning we harmonise with all states: wherever we arrive, we can bring peace of mind to everyone. Therefore, as long as one is still attached to the physical form—lying here, going there—there will still be conflict and stagnation; but remember that this is the consciousness (11:16 – inaudible).
Now, let us take the world as an example; how might we illustrate this more clearly? From home, many of you have travelled here for over an hour; I ask, do you realise how many scenes you have passed through? But what is your purpose in going? Ah, to come here; to meet and discover your own inherent wisdom; our ultimate purpose is to merge with everyone so that we may understand one another, and comprehend all the wisdom that everyone has willingly offered to us. But ask yourselves: which is the true one? The true scene, or the true wisdom? There you have it. Now you can clearly see that: ultimately, we must return to our own fundamental wisdom; only then can we merge with the Great Stillness of Emptiness. The Great Stillness of Emptiness is every state of being. Before you lies emptiness; in this life, it also flows into the Heart, Liver, Spleen, Lungs and Kidneys of everyone—it is still at work.
Then there is also the ultimate clarity above; whilst it appears light and pure, its power is far greater than that of the phenomena before our eyes; it penetrates the entire universe and beyond. Therefore, that clarity is infinite.
Therefore, you must remember that when you perceive this, that and the other, you are afforded the opportunity to resolve the doubts within your heart, and to find solace in part of the karmic conditions of your spiritual practice. And from there, we must progress further, until we reach infinite clarity and purity. Only then is it truly the case that ‘the mind moves, the spirit knows’, so that our bodies harmonise with the cosmos, ‘becoming one’.
Only then do we clearly see that the Buddha sat in meditation beneath the tree, and from His own being, a radiance shone forth from the crown of His head. Therefore, you must journey within yourselves, moving upwards from the soles of your feet; ultimately, you will converge at the crown of your head; only then will you perceive that the image of God, the image of the Saints, is present—with a ring of light upon the crown of the head. Therefore, having practised, we must remain steadfast in maintaining that luminous realm.
If we are doctors, we will know how to use this to inspire the patient as we approach them; and our prayers can open the spiritual heart of the other person; when we speak and think of God—for the patient themselves is God—only then can we set their soul free; for God sent His Son into the world to learn about impurity, but He became stagnant and lacked courage, and so He became trapped within the illness. Therefore, we must guide them to become more courageous, so that they may realise that the very situation currently tormenting them is the result of their own stagnation and delay, which has led them to suffer this affliction. Thus, by resolutely overcoming this to advance towards the All-Powerful, infinitely wise One, their illness will certainly be alleviated by fifty to seventy per cent.
Consequently, many people pray for the illness to cease, and the will of the person praying must be carried out with a degree of purity of mind; the mere thought of this is enough to bring relief to the patient. It is not a matter of praying for help from Above; rather, our will must recognise that ‘God is one with us, God created us, and God is ever-present within us and within the sick person.’ This understanding of salvation is crucial. Therefore, at some point, you will also wish to heal the sick, and you will find yourselves projecting your spirit and soul to treat patients; then you will wish to act to save lives in this world. At that time, you must maintain solely that pure, divine aspect to save humanity and the world.
Then we will always be carrying out God’s work, and assisting God in saving everyone. Those very sick people are also God, though God is still held back; we must guide them to evolve and become one with us; we are united in one enlightened family, and united in God’s infinite radiance, so that there is no longer any delusion in this world. Thus, the practice of cultivation becomes increasingly focused on self-cultivation, withdrawing into oneself to save sentient beings, without any calculation whatsoever, but solely concerned with resolving all the impure emotions within our innermost being and our own confrontations.
Therefore, for a time, you may be able to dispel the clouds: lift your head straight up, think of a cloud—any cloud—and close your eyes to visualise it; then, if you wish, you can dissolve it. Just as I am speaking to you now, having come here to converse with you, I too have dispelled the clouds: causing all the heavy, impure burdens within your hearts to vanish. After questioning, talking and discussing with me, the current of my pure energy transforms the darkness within your inner consciousness, causing it to dissipate, and it returns to its fundamental state of lightness.
That is why many people want to come here to ask me about their numerous doubts; some even want to challenge me, but after observing me for a while, they realise there is nothing to it. Take this chap, for instance—he used to be in Phan Thiet and planned to fly here just to slap me across the face. Ask him; isn’t that right? (The audience laughs) Just to see what would happen if he gave me a slap? Well, he said, ‘You’re so lovely!’ He said, his hand was already raised, just about to strike with a ‘Smack!’ and that would have been it; but when he got here, that ‘Thanh Điển’ layer dissolved the impurity: because ‘điển’ is water; water is ‘điển’: they intermingle! So that power dissolved it all, and there was nothing left! Because, when she came up, she said, “I’m telling you the truth, I was about to swing my arm and slap you right here! But when I got here, why can’t I do it anymore! You’re just too lovely! Never mind, let me give you a kiss!” (The Venerable Master and his fellow practitioners all laughed). So it was she who had planned the whole thing from Phan Thiết right up to this point! Ah! These days he has proof; when I came here to speak, no one believed me; but now, this chap has proof! He’s very hot-tempered; a soldier, after all—very hot-tempered! There you go. So, thanks to that hot temper, he nurtured it to aid his practice, so that his spirit could manifest more easily. People with hot tempers find it much easier to see the manifestation of this Dharma; they reach enlightenment much more readily.
Then, after a while, you must remember to listen again, remember to listen again to what I’ve said: you are infinite; you are not limited by circumstances; you must merge with whatever circumstances you encounter—whether in your dreams whilst sleeping, or with your eyes open—it’s all the same. Every scene is a trial for evolution. People in this world, whilst inhabiting this physical body, are undergoing this trial to evolve spiritually, to attain enlightenment and expand their wisdom: to live in harmony and with greater practicality. Now, do any of you have any questions?
Disciple: Yes, Master, in the Amitabha Sutra, there is a passage stating that Amitabha Buddha, whilst in meditation, received a divine revelation from the ‘Holy Spirit’ descending upon Ha Dao City; and from this, may we understand that the ‘Holy Spirit’, or the saviour, descended to offer salvation? And in this way, Buddhism and Catholicism share the same teaching; as I understand it, the ‘Holy One of Non-Action’ is the ‘Holy Spirit’; therefore, the division between this religion and that does not actually exist: depending on time and place, God reveals His teachings to humankind through various forms and languages. Is that correct, Master?
The Master: That is indeed the case. Therefore, those who practise spiritual cultivation, just as Amitabha Buddha did, have turned towards the higher realm and purified themselves. Thus, ‘Buddha’ simply signifies lightness. Hence, as I said earlier this morning, we must embrace it! But is there a basis for this acceptance? There is a basis for acceptance; we see the Way of Non-Action coming to us within the state of meditative awareness. As for the mundane world, it must be separated, for worldly ignorance is still deeply entrenched; without a proper order, chaos would ensue. As for the practice of the Way of Non-Action, the order lies within enlightenment; there is no chaos. As for the order of ignorance in this world, there must therefore be what is called ‘management and control’; but where does this management and control lie? It depends on the circumstances: ‘ ’—this person is the same age as me, yet why is he suffering so much? That person is also of the Year of the Rabbit like me, yet why is he so happy? Examples such as these. That is the control and guidance provided by the Zi Wei system; it shows us that the order of the earthly realm must necessarily be this way; we must accept it. Thus, ‘From my worldly life, I have turned to the Way to learn and evolve.’ Therefore, people in the world have given the Buddha this name, that name, and yet another name, as I explained very clearly earlier this morning; for what purpose? To establish order; because people in the world must be guided within an order, for they remain in great darkness, yet they consider themselves wise. And we, too, have a part in that.
Therefore, now that we have awakened, we need harmony and oneness; ‘From the One Source arise myriad branches; the myriad branches return to the One Source.’ Thus, our will is firmly established here, and we see that we direct our entire being to act in accordance with our will and intention. If our will is in harmony, then everything down here becomes pure and harmonious, and the afflictions cease: whilst we raise our voices to preach the Dharma, the afflictions must cease; thus, ‘Like sounds resonate with one another; like energies seek one another out’; that is how it must be for those on the spiritual path. But people in the world are constantly at loggerheads. That is why, having practised, when we attend political meetings, we find it utterly exhausting: we talk for nearly a whole day without getting anything done; one person argues one point, another argues another; in the end, there is a lack of harmony and unity. Do you see? As for us practitioners, “It’s so easy! I’ve got it! Even if there’s a meeting, whatever they want to do—it’s of no consequence! ‘I’ve got one hundred per cent, but they’re only using twenty per cent of me—what’s the point of sharing? I’m not interested.” Because we already possess immense clarity within our inner consciousness, such matters hold no significance. It’s merely a superficial explanation, without any real understanding of the political manoeuvring taking place here; it’s not within the inner consciousness; it’s only on the surface! Consequently, when discussing the whole world—from one parliament to another—they argue after eating; they argue until they’re blue in the face, yet in the end they don’t know who they are; they just keep arguing! So, it’s a massive waste of time! Consequently, people lose their peace of mind; they may hold high positions, but if you ask them, ‘How are you?’—they’ve lost their peace of mind; they have headaches; they’re beyond remedy! Lost their peace of mind: (laughs) they have to worry about tomorrow’s arguments rather than concerns such as harmony, wisdom, and guidance towards the infinite! They cannot attend to such matters! Therefore, life is different! Yes.
Fellow Practitioner: Master, what about sin in Heaven?
The Master: Yes.
Fellow Practitioner: What sort of sin is that?
The Master: Sins in Heaven are when one manages to step out, along with those who can astral project—still in the early stages—thinking one is quite advanced: one feels one is already strong. But if one does not progress towards the infinite realm, then one must follow the path downwards; what else is there?
Fellow Practitioner: Yes
The Master: It is darkness. That darkness drags one down. Therefore, many practitioners, having attained only a modicum of enlightenment, proclaim, ‘I am the Master, the spiritual leader!’ Is that so? Then they organise this society, that society, and the other. Then, when they encounter confusion and disorder within these groups, they must hold meetings; but what do they base these meetings on? On the will of the majority. Yet all those who follow them have not practised as they have; do you see? So chaos ensues, and it drags everything in that chaotic direction; consequently, this spiritual guidance is doomed to fall into ruin all at once.
Therefore, on this side, we do not have that: this Dharma is your Dharma: you must take full responsibility for yourself, and shoulder the debts accumulated from past lives up to the present; you must settle them; for no one can help you. As for the person who transmits the Dharma to you, they are called ‘Teacher’; but you yourself are also a ‘Teacher’; calling someone ‘Teacher’ is just like saying ‘I’ and ‘you’; everyone is a ‘physical Teacher’.
Therefore, we follow the doctrine of harmony and fairness, which is to ‘break through attachments and dispel delusion’; in friendship, we always maintain an attitude of encouragement, support and progress. Consequently, whilst I have repeatedly requested this in the world, it has not been granted; yet everyone respectfully addresses me as ‘Thầy.’ Now I clearly see that everyone is also a ‘Thầy’; for we are all ‘physical teachers’; every person is a physical teacher; so when a ‘Thầy’ speaks to another ‘ ’ it is ‘Thầy’; ‘Tao and Mày’; with love; there is nothing more to it. Once you’ve broken through that concept, you won’t be bound by it the next day. It’s just like practitioners of other traditions, who feel they must fear ‘the Master’! Here, that’s not the case; when you see the Master, you can joke around with him—there’s nothing to it. We have love for one another; it’s clear that the entire cosmos is one great family.
Fellow practitioner: Master, that is the sin of ‘offending the Heavenly Countenance.’
The Master: Yes.
Fellow Practitioner: And what about the sin of ‘Tổ Tông’?
The Master: The ‘sin against one’s ancestors’ relates to the concept of filial piety; if a person practises the Way yet does not understand filial piety, then they practise whilst forgetting themselves, failing to tend to their inner self—such a person is unfilial; ‘claiming to practise the Way whilst failing to do so,’ as I have said. For we must cultivate and mend our inner self and inner being through our practice; only then are we truly filial. Let me ask you: ‘Now, when parents see their child is unwell, can they bear it?’ If a child knows how to look after themselves to stay healthy, their parents are delighted; they are never unfilial; they know their parents love them, rather than the parents merely waiting for gifts or treats from them. If they look after themselves, maintain order, and know how to harmonise with the wider community to live in an open society, then their parents will be at ease and happy. But if they do not know this, and merely rely on their own will to rule the world, then ultimately their physical body will suffer. Therefore, revolutionaries who are assassinated or suffer all manner of misfortunes do so because they do not know themselves, but only focus on the external; consequently, people perceive them as tyrants, and that is why they are killed. One must share one’s inherent sense of justice with everyone, so that they recognise a shared sense of responsibility, rather than expecting a single president to accomplish everything.
Disciple: Yes, Master, it is regarding ‘Original Sin’ that I wish to ask you,
The Master: Yes.
Disciple: ‘Original Sin’ in the Bible refers to Adam and Eve’s sin of disobedience—disobeying God’s command and will—which led to their banishment to the earthly realm; and upon being banished to the earthly realm, they begot children, and these children were consequently imperfect, and so must practise spiritual cultivation to return to God. May I ask, Master, does this ‘Original Sin’ have a symbolic meaning, or is it an actual sin?
The Master: It is no different from what I have said: people are encouraged to practise, and that is all they are told; but the law itself does not speak of Adam and Eve, just the two of them. For if you look in the scriptures, you will see—but no one has actually witnessed that event! And in truth, it is not like that! Because the radiant light descends infinitely, encompassing the evolution of the entire Earth; it is not just those two people. However, people use this reasoning to teach humanity to aspire upwards: it is because of filial disobedience, loss of wisdom and ignorance that one descends into the world; one is subjected to a state of dispersion; and if one continues to be dispersed, there will be no opportunity to return.
Disciple: Master, it is precisely through such a question that I have come to understand that when a bandit,
The Venerable Master: Yes.
Disciple: And puts down his knife,
The Venerable Master: Yes.
Disciple: And cultivates a resolute and courageous spirit,
The Master: Yes.
Fellow Believer: Then that person, through their practice, may become a Buddha. But in the opposite case, it is not possible for one who has attained Buddhahood to wield a knife and commit a crime. However, there is also a case in the Bible where the Angel Lucifer was known as ‘the Bringer of Light’, which of course is also defined as a Buddha,
The Master: Yes.
Fellow Believer: A Buddha is also a bringer of light, of radiance. So, according to the Bible, Lucifer’s sin was one of arrogance, thinking himself equal to God,
The Master: Yes.
Fellow Believer: He rebelled against God, and so was cast down to become a demon. So is that merely symbolic, or is it a true story?
The Master: That story pertains to worldly theory; the authors of these books in this world still cling to such notions, so they see that even that enlightened being was subjected to slaughter and calamity, and thus had to be cast down. That is also a warning to those who practise; and that warning serves as a guide leading them straight to the enlightenment of the Holy One. Therefore, let us not be mistaken into thinking that this reasoning comes directly from Above; rather, it is a reasoning created by the world. Thus, when we listen to the Bible or read sacred texts, we can discern which passages are true and which are false. Just as today, when we hold a meeting, if someone transcribes a tape and makes a single mistake, we can rewind the tape—there is proof! In the past, there was no such thing as: ‘Three copies, seven versions!’
Therefore, religion is about the free development of the spirit; no one has the right to restrict it, nor the authority to do so; God has granted everyone the grace to develop freely. We should not use an organisation to exert control, nor rely on a scripture which, when we fail to interpret it properly, force others to listen to us! That is the ‘Original Sin’; it is even graver than the sin of Adam and Eve; that is far graver.
Consequently, Hell is now filled with people day in, day out; though they practised diligently—the world heard of them, saying, ‘They were renowned, held in the highest esteem, had it all’—yet in the end they find themselves kneeling in one spot, unable to move a muscle! That is solely due to the sin of ignorance. Therefore, within this realm where we practise, we must re-establish the order of each individual to recognise the errors of past lives; in a past life, you were a tyrant, controlling certain people and forcing them to practise; you were cast down; now your great vow has returned, and you must re-establish a better order; you must build, and cast aside that remaining tyrannical nature—you must let it go—and walk in harmony to evolve.
Therefore, this Way of Non-Action will uncover all that is deluded—what people mistakenly regard as ‘True Principle’—which is incomplete, yet is propagated to the world in such an unjust manner; and if they continue to uphold it, then one day they will (inaudible – 30:41).
Disciple: Master, when we speak of the Way, we are speaking of Truth.
The Master: Yes.
Disciple: Please teach us the Principle of the Way.
The Master: Yes. The Principle merely sows ideas; the Principle of the Way merely sows ideas; those who have succeeded use the light that guides the way to sow these ideas. But what is most essential is that those who receive these ideas must put them into practice. The Principle merely sows ideas. Therefore, in global gatherings, it is merely a race of theories and the sowing of ideas, but they cannot be put into practice. Hence, the revolutionary theories of this world, once hailed as the pinnacle—people used to say, ‘Communism is wonderful!’—but today they have grown weary of it; they cannot put it into practice! Only through practice does one see! Do you see? Therefore, when we practise, we see the light. There you have it.
Fellow Practitioner: Yes, Master, that is exactly right.
The Master: Yes.
Disciple: I realise that the decline of that doctrine may well have a similar rationale. Here in the East, Confucianism has also declined, giving rise to a host of reactionary Confucians.
The Master: Yes.
Disciple: We have Laozi’s Way of Non-Action, which has also declined, giving rise to mysticism, delusion and superstition; in the Catholic faith, whilst worshipping God in one’s heart, one also worships in the church, thereby creating a hierarchy that distorts the true principles of the faith; The Lord taught that one must ‘renounce the self to seek the Way and renounce wealth to embrace poverty’, yet we, to a greater or lesser extent, have all become the wealthy of this world, at least for a time. Master, is it not the case that these three major religions of humanity lack a method of cultivation? I understand that Confucius taught that ‘The Mandate of Heaven is stillness; the manifestation of one’s nature is the Way,’ which also refers to the word ‘Way’, yet no one upholds the true Way, and no one knows how to cultivate the Way or which method to follow. The same applies to Taoism.
As for the Catholic faith—and I am a Catholic myself—I have no specific method of practice, yet I understand that the Lord, before His Passion on the Cross, went into the desert to meditate, ‘uniting with the Father’ for forty days; and it is likely that of the twelve Apostles, at least eleven—excluding Saint Jude, who took his own life—must have been taught some method of spiritual practice by the Lord in order to become saints and return to Him. As for the flock, for the past two thousand years, I have found that, personally, I find it very difficult to uphold the Faith, because the Ten Commandments are very simple, yet incredibly difficult to follow; and in particular, three of the Ten Commandments concern sexual immorality. Sexual immorality in thought is also sexual immorality; it is a grave sin; yet, even knowing this, I still commit the sin; why is that? I believe it is because I lack a spiritual practice.
As for Confucius, it seems he followed his own spiritual practice, which was ‘Zen Music’—music within Zen, meditating through music; but as the Classic of Music has been lost, none of Confucius’s disciples were able to keep pace with his path. As for ‘Wu Wei’ (Non-Action), it is naturally understood to mean doing nothing at all in the world and withdrawing from it entirely. So what responsibility do all three great paths of humanity bear towards the instruction of sentient beings? Or is this also part of God’s intention—to allow us to practise and learn on our own, to study all manner of things, until finally God opens a path and bestows a method of practice so that we may know the way back to God?
The Master: Among all religions—the three great religions of the world—there are those who succeed; it is not the case that ‘there are none at all’. There are those who succeed; but they are very few in number; very few indeed. As for the matter of God having ordained that everyone should undergo reincarnation to learn, it is only natural that each person must progress towards a state of balance before they can perceive the Way; but this progress is slow. Now, however, we have been given this Dharma; we may consider it slow, but it must progress. Nowadays, people’s level of understanding is different.
In the past, people’s level of understanding was low; those Saints who followed the Lord attained sainthood simply by maintaining a pure and unwavering faith in the Holy One, and thus reached the Realm of the Saints. The Realm of the Saints pertains to the Way of Non-Action; it is not a lofty realm: one who possesses faith is a Saint, and by proceeding thus, one attains the Realm of the Saints. That faith must maintain its integrity, cultivate virtue, and advance towards the realm of the Saints; reaching the pinnacle of Christianity means reaching the realm of the Saints. As for other religions, such as Confucianism and so on, it is the same: they are building up the people’s level of understanding; and it is within that level of understanding that the Way is discovered. Taoism is no different; the same applies to Taoism: gradually, step by step, it progresses until the method is discovered. Some use methods, others use knowledge—that is, concepts and understanding—to seek the infinite enlightenment of the spirit. They seek it out for themselves.
Therefore, spiritual practice must be thorough; ultimately, one must discover one’s true self before one can claim to ‘understand the Way’. If one has not yet discovered who one is, one will never understand the Way; one loses one’s balance. If you seek in others, you will lose your balance; all this time, you’ve been talking about this God, that Buddha, all sorts of things; you’ve already lost your balance, you’re adrift! But when you return to yourself—‘I seek myself’—only then do you find balance! Then, ‘I seek myself, and only then do I see the Way; and the Way is within me! Only then do I develop infinitely.’
So, nowadays, all of us practise this Way of Non-Action; in the past, if not Confucianism, then Buddhism; if not Buddhism, then Taoism; if not Taoism, then Christianity. I myself was raised as a Christian: every morning I would kneel in prayer, simply so that I might study well—that was all. That’s it. When we went to school, we had to follow a religion; but in the end, it was merely a matter of fostering faith, because the clergy had seen that the saints had succeeded through faith. Therefore, the priests preached to their flock that one must have absolute faith in God to be saved. But how many truly have absolute faith? Because life is so alluring. Why is it so alluring? Because one’s body is out of order, so one is drawn to external influences. Hence, we distinguish between the secular world and the spiritual realm: monks who practise daily self-discipline find it easier; whereas laypeople, lacking such discipline, may make a slight effort when they enter the church, but once they return home, the allure of the secular world pulls them back; that’s it. So, they get stuck there. Then it takes pleasure in this, that and the other; then it makes excuses, saying, ‘God has granted’ it everything it desires (laughter); as a result, it becomes stagnant. But its will is what God wills; if that is what it desires, let it learn; it must suffer to progress; it must be challenged to correct itself.
That is why we say, ‘A robber who lays down his knife becomes a Buddha.’ Because a robber is brave! A robber is incredibly brave; because even when people’s doors are locked, he dares to break in and take things; he takes them right in front of people! He is incredibly brave; he isn’t afraid of death, which is why he takes them! But when he realises that the Buddha is braver than he is, he lays down his knife and becomes a Buddha; he must press on, daring even to challenge the Buddha himself in order to become one. Thus, a person who does not believe in the Dharma but is willing to practise will attain enlightenment sooner than one who is devout but refuses to practise. That is where the difference lies. Therefore, God will bear witness to the hearts of those who practise with courage and wisdom; whilst those who do not practise with courage and wisdom will only bring about their own downfall: stagnation and delay, because they are drawn away by external circumstances; and that includes us. We have been in this state for some time, but now we have awakened. Returning to establish order, we realise: ‘We are stagnant, we are lagging behind; therefore, we must re-establish order to return to the Way.’
Fellow practitioner: Master, of the three character traits that cause the most suffering in this world—greed, anger and delusion—
The Venerable Master: Yes.
Disciple: Can greed and delusion be redirected?
The Venerable Master: Yes.
Disciple: From impurity to purity,
The Master: Yes.
Fellow Practitioner: And lead to enlightenment.
The Master: Yes.
Fellow Believer: Master, what about ‘anger’?
The Master: ‘Anger’ is the springboard for evolution. If we direct our ‘anger’ upwards, only then will we gain a deeper understanding of the True Doctrine. But if ‘Anger’ is directed downwards, it can even kill people! Yet if we direct it upwards, we say, ‘The Buddha’s belly holds the Dharma; let us enter the Buddha’s belly—what is there to fear!’ Ha, ha! We attain the Way with ease! (laughs) To know Anger and to use Anger is to attain the Way! To know Greed and to use Greed is to attain the Way. Craving, Anger, and Delusion offer us the opportunity to awaken and progress infinitely; yet we use these very weapons to return to our original state: we do not speak of it, but we hold fast to this: ‘It is not certain that You will descend for me to believe in You! But I must become You!’ Such courage! ‘It is only through this Anger that I can reach that place!’ Then that wisdom always returns to us; the Higher Power always loves us. Now we teach our pupils, and they demand our teachings; when they speak, we agree to that; is that acceptable? If You are truly capable of saving sentient beings, then we must help them! ‘That curious fellow will learn everything from me, and he will become better than me! We should be delighted for him; for he is us!” That is what was said.
Fellow practitioner: Master, the issue isn’t about eradicating greed, anger and delusion, but rather about redirecting greed, anger and delusion?
The Master: Building,
Disciple: Building.
The Master: Greed, anger and delusion become a tool of God. This worldly ‘tool’—‘Greed, Anger, Delusion’—is also meant to awaken those lacking wisdom: ‘I was so greedy that I ended up in prison.’ Going to prison, they wake up and dare not do it again! Do you see? ‘I was so angry, I accidentally slashed my wife and ended up in prison; but in truth, I loved my wife dearly. I was so furious that I slashed her; I ended up in prison!’ They wake up and dare not do it again next time! That is because their level of understanding is still low. Now that we’ve reached a higher level, we must utilise that capacity. Take the man in prison: why was he so violent before, yet now that he’s been released, why is he so gentle? He knows how to channel his anger upwards and let go of worldly matters: ‘Enough, let’s just be done with it; the world is illusory; killing people and serving time in prison is sheer misery!’ It is not the crime itself; that is simply the darkness within everyone. Yet God still bestows His grace to give them the opportunity to evolve. Therefore, even those who descend into Hell learn for a time before returning to purity. Thus, all of us have already passed through Hell, and we have fulfilled our great vow. Therefore, everyone possesses a compassionate heart: after all the turmoil and upheaval, we have the compassionate desire to contribute. We have it all; we have our great vow; but what is lacking is practice. Therefore, once we practise and establish order, we see the opportunity and the place to fulfil our great vow.
Disciple: Thank you, Venerable Master.
Fellow practitioner: Dear Master, could you please tell us what we should use as a yardstick to measure a person’s level of spiritual cultivation?
The Master: God has provided the yardstick when He came down to this world: living with one’s parents, living with one’s siblings, living with one’s spouse, living with one’s children; living amidst the adversities of society—these are the measures. If we practise spiritual cultivation with the aim of ascending, we should be pure and forgiving; but if, when we go out onto the street and someone strikes us, we strike back; then we know, ‘You haven’t got there yet; go back and practise some more!’ The yardstick is ready!
Fellow practitioner: Thank you, Master.
The Master: Does anyone else have any further questions?
Disciple: With your permission, Master, I would like to ask you a question regarding the concept of ‘filial piety’. In Eastern texts, there are many interpretations; for example, ‘the righteousness of Heaven and Earth’, or ‘loving one’s parents and honouring one’s elders’. According to your spiritual practice and your perspective, what is the essence of the relationship between a child and their mother, and what is the true nature of filial piety?
The Master: The concept of ‘filial piety’, as I explained earlier, is this: our parents gave birth to us, cherished us deeply and held us in the highest regard—‘Not even a fly or a mosquito is allowed to touch my child!’ Is that clear? Yet nowadays, ‘My child takes their own body and goes off to take drugs’; that is a lack of filial piety. Therefore, we must not entertain any thought of an action that destroys our physical bodies. If we destroy our physical bodies, we are unfilial towards the community, unfilial towards our parents, and unfilial towards everyone—right up to God Himself. Therefore, we must grasp the very foundation of this ‘Microcosm’; we must build upon it to establish what is called ‘Order and the Right Path’—and we must realise this through our actions. Thus, though parents may be far from their children, they are never truly apart: they are forever filled with love and longing; and, ‘My child has attained spiritual purity and knows how to love everyone .’ If you wish to practise filial piety, you should take better care of yourself; you should work harder to refine your character; then you will clearly see that, ‘I am truly filial; I know how to love my mother and father, and my mother and father love me very much; I do not disappoint sentient beings; and I have a duty, within the Law of Cause and Effect, to bring harmony to all places and all realms!’ At that point, you will feel light-hearted and have resolved the matter of filial piety. Does anyone else have any questions?
